![]() ![]() NotePlan gives you a lot of date based note options. There are other good options too, DEVONthink is superb for non-markdown files (it’s decent at Markdown too), I actually used it alongside Bear and still use it with Obsidian. Obsidian is what I now use, Bear is what I recommend to most other people. They are both two incredible notes applications, I’d argue the two best at opposite ends of a spectrum and you can’t go wrong with either depending on your needs. DataView is another powerful plugin that I’m really looking forward to digging into when I have the chance, it basically lets you query your markdown files like SQL and render the results in real-time when you preview the note. I personally really like Mermaid diagramming support and the template options with Templater is so powerful, especially when you start using YAML metadata in your templates. It’s likely that this is a side effect of being developed at breakneck speed. It is far less efficient and unfortunately quite unstable for me. That said, I’m fairly happy with it using the above themes with some theme settings tweaks and it doesn’t feel totally out of place. It’s based on Electron, not native and it feels like it doesn’t fit the apple platforms, especially on iOS. You can add and remove UI elements, you can theme it however you want with CSS or pick a theme that is a bit less cluttered, I really love the California Coast and Ying and Yang themes. It isn’t as elegant as Bear but that’s partially by design, it’s flexible enough to let you shape it with the features you want. Obsidian is in many ways the opposite, it’s extremely powerful and even more so through extensibility with a decent sized and rapidly developing library of plugins. There’s also no sharing or collaboration and who knows when the web version will be done. It’s not just missing features like backlinking or transclusion, it’s missing basics like tables or note outlines. It’s also several years behind every other markdown editor out there and development is glacial. It’s native to Apple platforms, it’s fast and it’s very stable. It also has the best URL scheme I’ve seen in any notes app as well as solid Shortcuts support if you’re into automation. All organization is tag-based, there are no folders which sometimes feels limiting but tags are implemented exceptionally well with nesting, tag icons, etc. If you want superb polish and design Bear is unmatched.
